But Data Alone Does Not Heal
Despite these impressive gains, we must not let the brilliance of innovation overshadow the fundamentals of human care. In my experience, some of the most impactful safety interventions have emerged not from complex algorithms, but from conversations—multidisciplinary huddles, family debriefings, and patient-designed materials.
Take, for instance, a case where technology flagged clinical deterioration in a post-operative patient. The alert alone wasn’t enough. AI amplified her capacity, but it was empathy and training that ultimately saved a life.
We must also recognise that biases in datasets, inequities in digital access, and over-reliance on automation can all introduce new forms of risk. Embedding a Culture of Safety
The integration of intelligent systems must go hand-in-hand with a culture of transparency, continuous learning, and accountability. To succeed, we must invest not only in platforms, but in people.
